I am quite new to last.fm and I am getting to know this new utility "scrobbling" but I don't understand very well how it works. Could somebody explain me how it works? What do you think of it?

By the way add me if you want, my nickname is Rohald.

Isnt scrobbler that thing that sees what the last thing you listened too and then updates that music list in your profile?

Pretty much yes. Last.fm utilises audioscrobbler which is essentially a way of tracking what you listen to. Every time you listen to a song with an audioscrobbler enabled player, when the song hits 50% or more (depending on how it's configured) the artist and track name is submitted to last.fm via the audioscrobbler protocol. As far as I know, Last.fm also utilises Musicbrainz to help tag music correctly.

Last.fm also has a radio service whereby you can listen to music basic on music you've already listened to or by typing in an artist or genre, it will then play music similar to that.

To properly understand it check out the rather informative article on wikipedia. I tend to alternate between last.fm and DG depending on my mood.

It would be very nice if the shoutcast server was able to supply artist and title information in separate fields so that music listened to on internet radio could be scrobbled, but as yet I do not think this is possible. If someone knows differently I'd be very keen to hear about it.

I know that when I listen with Amarok, everything on DG *does* get scrobbled. I think you have to tell your music player to enable scrobbling with streaming audio.

Really?

Amarok has never scrobbled anything I've listened to via streaming. That was amarok 1.4 though. I don't really like version2. Also can't recall any options to turn that on but I'll check again when I get home.

Yeah, version 2 sucks, but i'm forced to use it at work.

You have to go to last.fm options and check "scrobble streaming audio" or whatever

Where the hell did the word "scrobbler" come from.  It's as linguistically elegant as a 400 lb man in a unitard.  I'm thinking it is a hybrid of scrotum-gobbler because the word sucks balls.

Probably were going for something like "scribbler" but wanted to gobble balls instead.

Finally I've checked this out. Using Version 2 now as it's finally been marked as stable in the openSUSE package management system and yeah, it's scrobbling DG tracks. This is definitely a new thing for me. I can clearly remember running Amarok 1.4 on Gentoo a few years back and it not scrobbling. This could have been a build issue I guess?
