So, after a long hiatus, I've started DJ mixing again. Currently just burning dance mixes for friends...

I've never done anything real fancy or extravagant; my first few live gigs were at my college in the late 90s, where I had a brief set at a few dance events that I helped plan. My equipment was limited to a cheap Radio Shack mixer and a couple of really crappy consumer cd decks... It was challenging enough just getting a decent mix without any train wrecks. But, it was also great fun watching people who would have never explored this type of music on their own volition shaking their butts to FLA and Skinny Puppy on the same dancefloor as all my rivet buddies.

As long as people weren't yelling, trying to punch us, or throwing shit at the DJ booth, we pretty much considered it a success.

Anyhow, I digress - on to the point.

I finally finished putting together my digital mixing setup a few weeks back and started practicing again, and I'm curious what other DJs in the scene are currently spinning. What they play around here is usually 5-6 years behind, so it's not a real good indicator of what's happening. I also don't have many chances to get out to the clubs much anymore. So, any links to setlists from DJs in your area, or stuff you've mixed yourself... Or hell, just some songs you like to dance to would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Mind you m still an amature DJ so some sets arn't so great while other (I feel) are far better.

Sorry for the late response - work had me by teh balls (again) over the last week or so.

Those are great, thanks for sharing them! I'm thinking our CD collections probably look a lot alike... The first one you posted is especially epic; how long did it take you to get through that?

That first one was my first time spinning. Funny story behind that one. It was supposed to be like old school hip-hop & r&b in the 2nd room every last saturday of the month with DJ Swurv.

But he forgot his needles (and was a bit stoned), & at that time I always carried my CD's with me because I have a CD player (yes I have an iPod too...)

Well anyway, he forgot his needles for his vinyl & couldn't play. They needed 2 rooms of music because that is what they advertise on their flyers. So I got behind the decks for the first time ever.

It was a pair of denons & an Eckler(sp?) mixer. I watched my mentors, DJ's SailorGloom & I/O Control all the time for 2 years as they spun, & they did teach me & gave me guidence.

So anywho, the club started at 10pm & with each song being 3-6 min long (depending on the track, the artist, if it's a remix, extended remix blah blah blah) I played till roughly 3pm. BTW The club went from 10p-6a on the two nights it was open (Fri & Sat) & I have the music to go from a 10-6 club night, & then some :P

I will post more set lists when I get home from work today in about 30min from this post.

Nice, I like these too. When I was spinning in college my sets were roughly the same length; I had 2-3 other DJs every time to switch off with. The mixes I burn to disc for friends are also roughly the same duration... gets me thinking I should try a marathon session some time...

and you've given me some ideas for some transitions I hadn't thought of...

Work is going to slow down this week, so I'm hoping to sit down at the decks again and get some more practice in... it has been too long.

Some ideas? Do share these idea's with me.

Under the DJ's I was mentored from I learned to beat match my songs, and of course spending alot of time with the other EDM DJ's from Trance/Techno, D&B etc that have known for 4-5 years.+

Some DJ's I know have told me that in our scene you don't have to necessarly beat match the song. To me that just seems sloppy, I have been known to not do that on A SELECT (very select) few tracks (usually when m changing directions if I have a 2+ hr set)

But I go for the beat matching. Some of the songs you see together in a majority of my set lists are often my favorites to mix in together (i.e. I:Scintilla & Implant) I will be posting more this afternoon when I get home from work.

I'm no expert, but I think highly of DJs who beat mix, expecially if the songs flow together. Any quiet time between songs is bad, sloppy, and I've been known to yell obscenities from the dance floor when it happens. (usually if I don't like the DJ to begin with.)
