I'm going to be taking the train from Moscow to Beijing starting May 1st.  I'll be staying 3 nights in Moscow, 3 nights in Irkutsk and 3 nights in Beijing.  Anyone got any good tips for the train?  Where I should go in the cities?  What I should go see and where I can sleep?

That sounds terribly exciting!

You might check out http://www.couchsurfing.org/ for cheap accomodations and finding things to see and do.

avoid the women.  avoid government officials even more.  in fact, avoid the trip in you can.  the northern and western chinese borders and all of russias borders are notoriously wild and have infamously corrupt officials.  from what i hear mongolian officials are actually mostly honest.

My only advice would be to make sure you have at least one person that speaks a minimum russian because finding english speakers is hard around these parts.

Instead of learning the language I'll make up a sign ahead of time that says I am deaf, dumb, and mute.

lol, that's the perfect way to appeal to anyone that wants to take advantage of you. Seems like a good idea, but ends up as a B-Horror-torture movie for us americans. ;P

/agree

My girlfriend and I unfortunately went to see Hostel when it came out... I like horror movies, but that one was just gore-porn, and unfortunately has started a trend in the genre.

Some of the shit in that movie stuck with me for weeks, bleh.

I can't believe I bothered to watch Hostel some years back. What a waste of time.

And because this is a great time to post this:

I wonder if it is because we don't have many people posting that it is hard to stay on track.  Well atleast WildPeaks spoke up before the thread changed directions.  I couldn't get myself to watch Hostel, didn't look very original.  I thought the first Saw movie was interesting though.

As me last response to said side-rail: how is Hostel even a 'horror' movie?  Done =P
