John Carpenter's The Thing always vies with Alien (though i also consider the previous two to be horror movies as well) and Aliens (also an action film) as my fav of all time.
So are talkin hard core Sc-Fi - involving any mix of future/space/aliens/advanced tech - or just anything that might be labeled as such? Because some shite gets labeled that, that i seriously question...

Ehm, Star Wars, Star Trek? They are obviously Sci Fi.
Id also like to add Equilibrium. I think its Sci Fi and I think its awesome. Why? Dudes with black trenchcoates and motor helmets carrying G36's are awesome. Dancing around with dual guns shooting everyone in the face is awesome. Executing people by putting them in jet engines is both gruesome and awesome. That makes up for the terrible acting and special effects.
Then you got the whole Riddick thing. But thats only because Vin Diesel is badass.
Vexille. Japanese animation movie. Its pretty cool, and the action scenes are really good.

I need to get caught up on Riddick. Heard a lot of good about those movies. I think I will get Pandorum next, though. It sounds cool.
I saw Sunshine recently, I liked it and I was surprised it was directed by the Slumdog guy. (I hated Slumdog Millionaire, but never would have expected the director could make something like Sunshine.)
Saw the movie Moon a couple weeks ago and it was really cool.
This is not a space related movie, but Triangle is sci-fi/horror and there is a scene in it... easily one of the best scenes in movie history, imo. I can't spoil it cause it would ruin it, but my mind was blown when I saw it. :) (Not the last scene of the movie, though. The scene I'm talking about is about 2/3 of the way into the movie. Damn it's so awesome, I love it.) But it's not a spaceship sci-fi movie so it's kinda off-topic. It's just bloody/sci-fi.

Sci Fi doesnt have to be about aliens and space ships right? Basically, any movie that plays in a future with more advanced tech then we have now is Sci Fi.

Impressed byAppleseed. Pure sci-fi, it's hard to watch without thinking that it somehow it occurs in a less-cyberpunk GITS alternate universe. Some bad voice-acting and a pathetic soundtrack, but overall it's excellent.

Either someone had a bad day or this was a suicide. Not for the weak of stomach or faint of heart. This is graphic!

xeno, when you mentioned sci-fi movies in the original post it was not obvious that you meant the combination of sci-fi/horror and unfortunately you already listed all the movies i would have suggested, too
although personally i would disagree to call "sunshine" a horror related sci-fi movie, but rather more in the genre of utopia
sci-fi movies not so much with gore/horror but a decent amount of violence are the old ones like rollerball (with james caan) soylent green (with charlton heston) phase IV (main character are ants) invasion of the body snatchers (donald sutherland) the running man, total recall (arnie) demolition man, judge dredd (sly) cube (with the sequels)
no horror but a comedy sci-fi movie i really like to recommend is "dark star" (directed by john carpenter)

They execute people by putting them in fire rooms where they basically but you right after the afterburner of a jet plane and incinerate you.

Well, I'm not after specific horror movies, but rather dark semi-realistic movies set in space. Star Trek, Star Wars and so on is out, since they're neither dark nor anywhere near realistic... Stargate Universe is kind of a candidate...

A ship using a black hole warps to another dimension that happens to be Hell and then comes back as a living nightmare O_O Star Trek is probably the more realistic Sci Fi franchise of all the Sci Fi franchises out there. Besides, how is anything involving the Borg not dark? But meh, its your list. Well, anyways, good news for you, they are making an animated movie about Warhammer 40k. Realism? Sure, its 38000 years from now so gene manipulated super soldiers in power armor is probable. And a darker (or more awesome) universe then Warhammer simply does not exist. And to bad you cant add games to that list, because Mass Effect would be it. Dark and realistic as well as interactive and longer then any sci fi movie.

I failed a bit when posting my response, and missed a paranthesis - but anyway, "semi-realistic" as in having a bit of a realistic feel. Event Horizon fails utterly on credibility of the story (and so does several of the others) - but the environment as a whole feels a bit realistic... Star Trek is probably the more realistic Sci Fi franchise of all the Sci Fi franchises out there.
hold on a sec...there's a rift in the time-space continuum and tachyons are leaking through. Must have been caused by the holodeck anomaly from when the being of pure energy passed through the ship. Computer, dump the warp core and reverse the polarity of the shield! Unfortunately, I can't get the ship running again. To get spare parts, I had to visit this planet that had never had any contact with other species before. They were nazi's as usual, but I fitted right in by putting on a hat. Unfortunately they were out of delta class warp coil compensators. oh, you were saying? Besides, how is anything involving the Borg not dark? But meh, its your list.
true, but it mostly fails at everything else... First Contact could fit though, a stretch though... Well, anyways, good news for you, they are making an animated movie about Warhammer 40k. Realism? There's many great video games to choose from in video games... Dead Space, Prey, Doom 3, Quake2, ... that reminds me, I haven't watched Doom - the movie yet.... anyway, I think it was better with just my original posting, trying to find movies that were similar to those... :) - when I try to detail it, I just dig myself into a mess...

oh, you were saying? you got me rolling over the floor laughing there. Best laugh I had during the whole evening. Alright, I admit, the series arent really that realistic and some of the movies neither. But not all of them. There are some good movies, especially the latest one. Less being peaceful and more shooting stuff with phasers. Well, anyways, good news for you, they are making an animated movie about Warhammer 40k. Realism? Sure, its 38000 years from now so gene manipulated super soldiers in power armor is probable. And a darker (or more awesome) universe then Warhammer simply does not exist. It horribly fails. I mean seriously, all it has in common is the name Doom and the BFG. No more monsters from a hellish dimension but just a zombie creating virus. Come on. You could make a pretty awesome horror/sci fi movie about Quake though. Those strogg are absolutely disgusting. Who calls that dude that did Hostel? Im sure hell take a sadistic delight in filming the stroggification process. I really want a Halo movie though. Anyways. Starship Troopers?
