In addition to being a song that I kind of like, I thought the subject of it was neat too. I wondered how many listeners know what a Chupacabra is. For those that might not know, it is a mythical creature that sucks the blood of livestock, particularly goats. The name literally means goat-sucker in Spanish. I remember hearing about this in my high school Spanish class in the latter 90's, but was actually surprised to learn that this creature myth is pretty new. You can read more here. Within the last couple of years, a couple of chupacabra candidates have turned up in Texas and Oklahoma. I think one turned out to be a hairless raccoon found on a golf course this year. From 2009I'm sure if you do some digging you can find plenty of stuff on this creature. Edit: Actually, something like this is probably newsworthy, just not headline news... (I previously suggested this wasn't really news.)

I thought it was just a urban legend of sorts.
A bald, ugly coyote like creature that sucks the blood of cattle.
Also, that song is awesome. Then again, Nachtmahr is just awesome.

It's the Mexican Bigfoot! Or Loch Ness! Everybody wants their own mythology; it's part of having culture, you see. Oh, and the SgiFi channel made some really horrible movies based on it last year. Or the year before. Or before that. i forget which.
And yes, the song rocks.

There is truth a lot of times to cryptozoology. For instance, everyone who lives in a very rural area in the South knows that there are black panthers - and we don't give a shit what the egghead ecologists in the cities say. We see them. I've seen them many times. Years ago I was a manager of security over a plant and we had intrusion sensors that were routinely set off by a panther. We saw it clearly on camera almost every night. We did not have it recorded because the plant was being shut down and when the media equipment broke it never got replaced. But there were many witnesses. And the tracks were evident too. Also, we could hear her calling at night. Then one night she got an answer far away, we all heard it. We heard her several times throughout the night go farther and farther away towards the answer and we never heard or saw her agan after that. I believe she found a mate. I also saw panther one night while broke down in the woods looking down at me from the branch of a huge oak tree about 50 yards away. My flashlight caught it's eyes. It never moved. It just watched me until I got my fuse replaced and I left. I could see it in great detail because I always carry a high dollar surefire flashlight that lets out a super bright beam for almost 100 yards. I did not feel threatened by it. It was laying on it's side on a branch like a kitty cat just looking at me and wagging it's tail. I also saw one one time run across a desolate road chasing a fawn about 40 yards in front of my vehicle while I was driving.
As for the chupas, I think evidence kind of points to those being diseased animals. They probably have some type of skin disease that prey animals can smell and maybe that is why they take chances on eating chickens and cats and such. Just my view. By far the wierdest looking thing we have here are armidillos. I love them. I think their cute in a wierd prehistoric kinda way.

Isn't cryptozoology more about non-existant(as defined by mainstream knowledge) animals rather than real ones? Jaguars(jaguars can be black) do live in those parts afterall.

Ecologists deny that there are jaguars or some other species of big black cat in the South. People who have seen them up close say that they look different than the South American jaguars. Namely, that their ears are straight up and more pointed than a jaguar's, which tend to have rounded and stubby ears. I hear people compare their ears to a German shepherd pretty often. They also appear to have longer torsos and shorter legs. So I guess they are kinda like a black giant longcat :D People who see them close up have also commented that they have yellow eyes, and that their heads are not as round as a jaguar. They also have very long tails. Jaguars come in variable colors, but the panthers here have only been spotted in black. And they can not be a mutation of cougars because cougars look very different. Ever wonder who the Carolina Panthers were named for? It wasn't just a coincidence. Many rural Southerners believe in this creature. We've seen it. And in most cases as soon as it sees us, it books. It wants nothing to do with people. I suspect the one I saw that was lounging had just ate and was defending a carcass nearby and was not going to move unless I threatened it. It was certainly aware of me, but didn't seem like it could be bothered with going away. Cryptozoology is the study of mythical or rumored animals from my limited knowledge on the subject. As I stated before, many of those who spent 4 years reading about something they have little real world experience in and think they know more about a habitat than the people who were raised in it deny that this animal exists. I know different.

Black Panthers, as most envision them and as what is commonly accepted as such, are Leopards. Which you will ne'er find in North America. i don't care if two of those melanistic felines got out of a sinking wooden vessel centuries ago and tried to propagate in the wilds of the still undiscovered jungles of what is now Mexico. What you may have seen, Levi, is the very, very elusive Black Jag. But there is always 1 in a million. For it is very unlike a Jag and very, very like a Leo to perch in a tree. You're lucky she wasn't hungry i suppose. Otherwise, you'd have ne'er seen her and only felt the crushing weight of her upon your back as your body rushed to the ground in an agonizing head-long tower-spill, paralyzed from the claws embedded in your spine while massive paws snapped your neck, severing your consciousness and being. At least you would have ne'er felt your lifeless carcass being dragged back up the tree to be relished and gnawed at leisure. Yeah, Leopards are killing goddess/godly killing machines. But then, so are Jags in their environ. As are all cats.
Fuck Chupa. Fuck BigFoot. Fuck Werewolves even. i'd rather be a werecat.
Also there is the chance for even a 'black' cougar. It all has to do with pigmentation. And eye-witness accounts are always unreliable. i thought you would know that?
But anyway i would have to agree with consensus; namely that the 'black' panthers sighted in regions like Florida (lived there for 9 years) are most likely a margay or ocelot. Historically speaking, oft times the size and ferocity of a potential threat/predator is exaggerated in the retrospective mind's eye. Shit, not e'en historically. This is not to say that a melanistic Jag dinnae make its way into the northern Americas in the far past and perhaps there are a few instances scattered here and there.

It's pretty obvious to most people that they are Jaguars. However, the local terminology is "panther". I wish I was a were-Drew. When the moon got full all of the sudden I would transform into an uberkewl dude from Texas with an insane amount of knowledge about circuitry. I bet I could get ladies then.

LMAO! I have to confess that I once derived the electromagnetic far-field equations from maxwell's equations on my apartment patio sliding-glass doors with dry erase markers at all hours of the night, smoking cigarettes and alternately drinking beer and red bulls. The girl that lived across from us asked me what the hell I was doing, and what I was writing because none of it really made much sense. That said, the point of the story is that it was totally an "in" but I was too busy trying to get through school to do anything about it. Sad, really. She was amazingly hot. I do have people ask me to look at their electronics and see why they don't work. My favorite so far was a vibrator. That woman had no shame.
