You have probably noticed that, for the first time, I've put some advertising on DG.
The donation button just isn't working =p In the last 5 years, I've gotten maybe $200 total in donations. I'm very lucky to have a large amount of donated bandwidth (the only thing that has kept DG running this long) but hosting, CDs, hardware etc is still very expensive (I figured I probably spent about $2500 on DG last year.)
So I'm hoping the ads will help with a little income, but I have no idea how well they will work yet. I'm really posting this to ask - do you find them intrusive or annoying? I'm definitely not going to add anything obnoxious like popups.

As the ad's are now, I think they are fine. They arent in the way, annoying, or for really dumb shit. The google text ads are fine as long as they arent stuck every clickable place on the site and the thinkgeek logo might actually get some clicks from us.
Perhaps some of the record labels would be interested in purchasing some ad space?

Selling ad space isn't something I really want to get into, it'd take up way more of my time than I have to spend on it =p

Not intrusive or annoying at all.
I don't mind it at all...Do you get to decide on who advertises there or is that up to Google?
thinkGeek works well for me, I'll click that for sure.
As for the Label idea swampfeotus mentioned. I think that would be perfect.
Frankly they would approach you on something like that. Your assisting them, not the other way around and in this case it would be 2 fold. So that should save you some time there... and now that you have a place for advertising, they can actually approach you.
IMHO, the labels have a great opertunity here...hopefully they don't miss out.

... but hosting, CDs, hardware etc is still very expensive (I figured I probably spent about $2500 on DG last year.) Wait a minute... you BUY the CDs that get played on DG? Metropolis, ADD, WTII, BLCmusic, etc aren't sending you BOXES of freebies and begging you to add them to the DG playlist?!? Are those record labels STUPID?Do they have any idea how many of their CD's I've bought because I've heard the song here? Where else do the labels have to advertise? Do they think people are going to hear the songs on commercial radio? In a club? (well yeah, but you'll never know who sings the song unless you run over to ask the DJ, and few people are that motivated). I don't visit the site often (it's easier to just bookmark the stream in WinAmp), so I think what you should do is sell airtime (just like commercial radio, but only ONE ad between songs, not 6-minute blocks of annoying ads). I expect some people will whine about that... maybe even enough to inspire them to donate to avoid the ads. But seriously, the record labels have an extremely powerful marketing tool here, and it sickens me that they aren't paying for it.

I'd guess I probably get about 5-10% of what I play for free (off the top of my head, could be a little more or less.) I wish they'd all send me more :)

I totally agree with rskm1.
75% of the bands i know in this Genra i know cause of DG.
and all of the CDs that i have bought in this genra i have bought because I heard them here.
ROI for giving you CDs free is huge...
anything your listeners request... they should be paying attention to and sending your way.
That's surely the LEAST they can do.

Well, unfortunately it doesn't quite work that way. At least, not today.
Maybe one day. I wish!

The record companies should really pony up to have their signed bands being played on digital gunfire, as this is a premium web radio stream. I've listened to many other streams that have far less quality nor reliability for beingup 24/7/365 as Digital Gunfire Does. Last Christmas I listened to DG all day while most other streams just either had technical issues or couldn't be bothered during the holidays. I figure if I have to work I want to hear the best music. Digital Gunfire always offers the best Music. If digital gunfire has to put commercials between every song to keep it's current success and move forward into ever blooming success then i'm all for it.
It's niavetee to think that a service based business can be completely not for profit if it's not taking huge grants or backing from corporate or govenrmental bodies/institions. If you support Digital Gunfire then I ask fellow listeners to either donate time, material, or money to support this great venture who's time has more then come. Help bring this great music to the masses and support this more then noble and valiant effort.

The labels should force the bands to do live radio shows for us!

Shirow, is there a way for you to change the ads so that they open up in a new window on click? I know I can right-click and choose open in new window or tab but... just wondering.

There is, but it's actually against googles license agreement to do that.
