I don't like the fact that someone can rate an album without saying why. I want to know why this album got 3 stars, and that one five. I don't like blanket reviews. :)

Neither do I *particularly* but I think we're not necessarily going to get the same level of input from some people if we don't let them submit a rating without having to write anything. I can be swayed to disable that option if people agree on it, but my worry is that people then just write something like 'cool' instead.
Some of my thoughts have been:
A way to flag reviewers as a 'favorite'. Your favorite reviewers reviews would be highlighted differently. If a reviewer gets 'favorited' enough times, they become highlighted for everyone automatically.
A way to add albums to a 'wish list' that ties back into the rating/review system. That way if you read a review, think an album sounds cool, you can click [ + ] and save it to a wishlist for future purchase.

I think that people writing a one word review might be better than not writing anything at all. I imagine you're right that a lot of people will do just that, but even one word might be better than nothing at all.... also some people may be more inclined to write something meaningful if they have to write something, just to avoid looking like a dumb ass with a one word review. I guess some people may not rate a track/album if they have to write about it, but how useful is a star rating without something to back it up, and what prevents someone from flooding a track with a 5 star rating every time they're online just to make the song seem really good? I definitely second the 'rate the reviewer' idea, that would probably help reduce the trolls... peace, daemonikal www.forgetmeknots.net

I'd also like a public review function for individual songs, not just albums. Also, I'd very much like a private rating option, especially on individual song basis. A possibility to see which songs have been rated by a particular user (obviously only the public ratings) and your own rating would be really sweet, especially with the "new ammo" show in mind (I've already decided to buy some albums based on that show). Another cool feature would perhaps be a function similar to Amazons "other people interested in this thing also bought this other stuff" (so I can try to be as cool as swampy, creeps and the other crazies :)

I partially like the simple star ratings because i want to kind of vote on some songs, but I would write terrible dribble for a review. Seriously, its not worth anyones time to see what I thought of an album.
On the other hand I would really like to see some people with actual talent at writing reviews do some. You could give people awards I suppose. Something like every couple of months you could give the 3 people who submitted the most reviews (hopefully reviews that have been deemed worthy) and give them free shirt and cd or something.
I'm not really sure I like the idea of a full review of individual songs, do we really have to be that indepth? Perhaps we could do star reviews for individual songs then text reviews of albums?

I thought about the song thing.. it seems pretty in depth though and isn't really indicative of your thoughts on the album as a whole.
This doesn't mean I won't do it, I just don't want to make it overly complex for no reason.

personally i never know whole albums since im listening exclusively to dg i would rather give song-only oriented reviews than albums
