Personaly I think that te hardware is better. Its so much more fluent to pysically keychange whilst warbling into the mic. If your'e a tech geek and a perfectionist you can automate keychange with software. I don't use vocoding much, but it has its place in some chorus lines and shit. I was using Native Instruments' Vokator.

KVR's mda vocoder is effective and easy, but only moderately customizable.

But that's okay because the non-adjustable band settings sound awesome already!

I have used both hard- and software vocoders throughout the years. Currently I only use software. My favourite software vocoder is OrangeVocoder from Prosoniq. Although, TAL-Vocoder, which is free, is also great. TAL also have several other synths and effects available for free. Both for OS X and Windows.

I've always wanted a Roland VP-330 Vocoder Plus though.

The only issue with using software is latency. It can be a hassle if you can't get the latency down for near real-time performance. No big issue really, but it can cramp your style while doing the electric boogie.

Decided to jump into the forum right here...

I use both hard/soft, as they both got their charms.  I've got the old Roland SVC-350 [nomenclature may be a bit off], and that thing is still amazing.  When you consider digital vs. analog, that piece of kit trumps just about all digital/soft vocoders.  With hardware you get, IMO, instant gratification. Plug in anything that makes noise, and there you go.
I use Nuendo, and its own vocoder works quite nicely.  With that, you have the option of using its built in noise generator, or a VSTi, or any noise coming in the audio input of your DAW.
In either case, the synth being used, hard/soft, can still be quantized within your DAW.
As for as soft ones I've used: mda, kvr, Vokator, and a slew of other free VST's.

Never had much to do with Vocoders, but i've not long gotten a Novation A-Station, which includes a Vocoder and to be completely honest, it's bloody good fun and quite useful too.

Kord has contributed a little so I think he is or was a real person but he is definitely ramping up the spam.  I assume he is getting some form of monetary benefit from it.
