germany hamburg would be the place to go (;

there's the hamburg dungeon (kind of like a second rate london dungeon with puppets in a horror show, showing the city history, the famous pirate stoertebecker and such)
if you go and catch the first saturday of the month, there's still 'return of the living dead', a club for industrial/ebm/goth in 'die markthallen'
the alster, the city for shopping, the reeperbahn for evening entertainment, the big cinema shows movies in english (original language) and there's a very alternative part of the city with nice shops

duesseldorf or cologne would be really big vibrant cities as well
duesseldorf has the 'altstadt' which is mainly an accumulation of small pubs where they also serve beer from their microbreweries
cologne has the famous dom and a long stretch of the river rhein where you could do boating tours

otherwise for sightseeing i can recommend prague
beautiful city with lots of old buildings and small streets and really cheap (good) beer
there's the big castle on top of the mountain with its cathedral as well

hope this helps

i have been to london as well and it was absolutely fantastic, yet a bit expensive
there's a lot free stuff to see as well as some which i was gladly paying
like the new modern tate gallery (absolutely incredible)
went to see the piece of metal being the meridian, went to see some building and almost got eaten alive by squirrels (the birds sans birds ... but squirrels are soooo cute) and the science museum
i purposely did not go to the infamous tourist attractions such as the buckingham palace or the tower just to keep costs low
the tube system is great to get around and busses as well ... just remember when you want to cross the street which direction to look first(!) and at some corners they were politely enough to write it down

if you are a goth, whitby during the gothic weekend is the place to go
small cute city with nice cottages and a more or less interesting graveyard and some ruins on the top of the hill and of course the festival with lots of live acts and some night clubs (and a lot of different fashion styles to see)

i havent gotten around a whole lot myself really, not as much as i should have and moving away from europe i realize now what treasures i had right at my fingertip, canada doesnt offer it this well just because traveling is a bitch
