I'm surprised no one has mentioned May. It's one of my favorites. Also Videodrome, and American Psycho.

Also for gore:
Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
Men Behind The Sun (1988)

The animal deaths in these are real. They're really brutal.

Anyone who consciously decides to watch cannibal holocaust after knowing the history and story behind it has some mental issues, I think. I will never watch it.

Well of course! The book was brilliant! The movie was good too. Not as detailed as the book of course, (nothing ever is) but a very nice interpretation of the book.

As far as movies based on books, it is to be expected that the movie won't possibly be as good as the book. However, I found the movie adaptation of Stephen King's "Carrie" to be better than the book.  Stephen King's "Misery" is one of my favorite books of all time, and the movie didn't touch the magic of the book, but I was pleased with it none the less. Don't even get me started on "The Shining" though.

Meh, 'The shining' was pretty good, even compared to the book. Hell, I even think the movie was better then the book. It had this more claustrophobic feeling then the book.
Also, 'the mist' was a pretty good adaption of the book. Just to bad that they changed the ending into a terrible ending.

I didnt like 'It' though. Crappy special effects and just not as good as the book.

There's a new horror movie titled "Paranormal Activity". It's like the Blairwitch Project but a lot better. Take my word for it.

I know this one is obvious, but I just re-watched A L I E N director's cut and it is remains a beautiful, Freudian monstrosity. I think the special effects were coy enough that they actually stand up better than the stop-motion used in the sequel.
