Got a question for everyone: My favorite artists on DG are bands such as System Syn, The Echoing Green, Angels and Agony, etc. Is there a name this this sub-genre that I enjoy so much, or is it just a loose assortment of artists?
Also, how come I never seem to hear these guys on DG anymore? Is your randomizer set up to favor newly-added music, Shirow? Do you ever delete old music?

I do delete old music. New music is only favored in Fresh Ammo. The bigger the playlist gets, the less play each artist gets unless they are very well represented.
System Syn and Angels & Agony are definitely both still in the playlist.

I was thinking the same exact thing. Classification of sub-genres. Blah. It's all in the Industrial/Ebm umbrella anyway. |

Actually, from what I've heard, I think Futurepop was a marketing brand that initially was a synonum for the 3 bands Apoptygma Berzerk (around the Welcome to Earth era), Covenant (around Northern Light) and VNV Nation (around Empires/Futureperfect). The concept was to sell more albums by associating the music with the most well known artists, allthough I have no details here... As for the bands in question, I would hardly group them together in the same tiny subgenre at all... wouldn't even classify them as industrial, rather dance/electronica or something... By the way, a nice place for checking out one opinion/definition of genres is Ishkur's guide... our corner of the world is bundled together under trance, for some practical reason... and I struggle to see why he split the artists the way he did between darksynth, darkwave and futurepop... but meh, subgenres in this kinda music is a messy hell... http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/ |

There's this album called Forever by supergroup Bruderschaft that somewhere (I forget where) I got the impression that it was supposed to be some kind of Futurepop manifesto. But I see according to Amazon it's considered a tribute album...

All the Artists mentioned above I think to the best of my knowledge would fall under ELECTRO INDUSTRIAL ? check out www.metropolis-records.com as all these aritsts & more appear on this label,also there is a storyline as how each band came about.Check it out & give some feedback. thanx..... |

Here's another serious (and possibly pretentious) attempt :) System Syn: crossover between Ambient Trance, Synthpop and Futurepop The Echoing Green: goddamn hard to place - lots of bands like that, but don't know if there's a defined genre... just to invent something, I would say Second Wave of Anthemic Synthpop with IDM influences - just to make it easy :) Angels & Agony: Futurepop, plain and simple VNV Nation: Allthough they were a major part of the Futurepop hype, I wouldn't put them there - I would say they started off as EBM, and I would say their newer stuff is Epic EBM or something... |

That invention is pretty flawed... there's already defined a "Second Wave of Synthpop", and the bands associated with that doesn't have much in common with stuff like The Echoing Green at all... problem is, the pure synthpop people consider bands like that EBM, while for us EBM heads, they are clearly not EBM but synthpop... could steal the term Bodypop from And One, but I don't think that fits The Echoing Green much... I guess a term like Anthemic IDM Pop would make some people's head explode... maybe Progressive Synthpop, Electropop or something? anyway, I'm lost... it's goddamn impossible... |

I guess the question is, does it matter? When people ask me I say 'they sound a bit like band X'
Categorising bands by genre is a futile exercise IMO.
