What have you seen from Black metal?

Anyways, all the Norwegian/Swedish/Finnish stuff is pretty good. Children of Bodom (though technically not Black Metal), Deicide, Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth (British though) are pretty big names.

You might wanna try Behemoth (Polish) and Satyricon as well.

Yes, these are famous and for me honoured bands..
I higly recomend Dimmu Borgir and Sytyricon preliminary.

Its not off topic to mention an old school black metal, e.g. Mercyful Fate
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yFCwDU3bw4) - theyre great but some people really dont like King Diamond..

So enjoy the black waves.. >:D

Don't want to start a new thread just to say that "Dragonfly", by Android Lust, sucks balls.

And, I can't believe it was rated a 5 by anyone! (It's now 4 stars, thanks to yours truly rating it a 1)

AND, in a strange twist of irony, I just requested it by mistake and don't know how to unrequest this song that I think has musical merit like Gilbert Gottfried's voice is soothing!!

Meh its okay. Im sure I love some music that everybody else here hates. Like you said, taste is subjective.

a friend of mine is devirginizing me to black metal, or whate'er. i like it so far and i've seen you know a bit about it...so...any recommendations?

If you like pretty slick and well produced mainstream black metal, then I really recommend the album
Death Cult Armageddon by Dimmu Borgir. Here's some samples:

http://www.youtube.com/user/NuclearBlastEurope#p/search/7/kmQgP5ouZNo

if you want the more raw stuff, then you have a.e. Mayhem (who more or less started the whole
thing in Norway) -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhVmpuwsRjU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y84gW_5ZFKE

they're a quite different band now than when they're started - but then again, they lost 3 members back then, one to suicide, one to murder and one to 21 years in jail...

Jebus! Here's a picture of the suicide. The picture is apparently used as an album cover for a bootleg.

Wow, that's pretty wild stuff.

One shitty thing that you may want to watch out for when it comes to black metal bands, is that
some of the bands/people have far right (nationalistic/fascist/nazi/racist) views. It's a good rule that one should support the artists, but there are exceptions...

For instance, although the latest Burzum record is quite good, I simply won't hand over any money to
that guy...

Yeah its a whole Black Metal sub genre. NSBM (National Socialist Black Metal) its called I think. Anyways, its tricky because some of them just say that stuff to provoke while in reality they got nothing to do with it. Kinda like Hanzel und Gretyl only without the obvious humor.

But most big names in the genre are more about religion then politics.

There are a lot of pro Nazi fuckers in this scene too.  Including some bands played on this station.  I even encounter them in scenes as small as the one I am a part of.  Which is pretty damned small.  Like 30 people at an event sometimes.  It's always funny to see them act all conscious and feel like they have to explain themselves in front  of a Jew.  I admire the ones more who are defiant (but they are rare).  But then, most people don't find out until they ask me about my handle or until friends get on the subject of religion.  hey, we all have the freedom to be an enlightened friend to all or an ignorant jackass to a few.  and i have the freedom not to trust your fucking two faced ass as far as I can throw an elephant.

This thread (combined with the current pathetic state of the industrial scene) actually made me
dive further into black metal, so I bought a bunch of albums:

Immortal - Sons of Northern Darkness (2002) (example) - this is simply a great album, and I guess a great introduction to the genre too... accessible and good production

Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky (1991) (example) - one of the early black metal releases, and true to the genre - noisy, crap production, pretty dense and monotonous...

Darkthrone - FOAD (2007) (example) - Not black metal anymore, sounds more like if Motörhead had hired Dave Mustaine as a singer...

Mayhem - Ordo Ad Chao (2007) (example) - Pretty old school  - this album actually got chosen as "metal album of the year" in the Norwegian governments yearly music award thingie

Satyricon - Volcano (2002) (example) - Dunno what to say about this one... I bought the next one (Now, Diabolical) back in 2006 when it was released, and never got into it... this seems at least a bit easier for me to like.. :)

Dimmu Borgir - In Sorti Diablo (2007) (example) - Orchestral black metal... it's pretty complex technical stuff... and very well produced...  I love this stuff... although I still prefer their previous album (Death Cult Armageddon) (which I really really love).

Really? I thought Now, Diabolical was easier to listen too. Then again, that album was as minimal as you can get. I mean, one guitar and drums. On volcano they still where with 4-5 people I think.

Anyways, not sure if they where already mentioned, but The Kovenant. Cyber metal or something. Or just Industrial metal. Still, pretty nice stuff if you ask me. I gave up on them though. I dont like it when I have to wait 4+ years before they release their new cd. Especially when they said several times it would be released by the end of the year for like 4 times now. Instead we get re-releases from a bunch of old albums.

Well at least one of those 5s is me. Actually, after buying their album Resolution - which i wish was on here - a few years back as a surprise used CD, hearing Dragonfly on here is what got me completely Hooked. Lined. Sinkered.
