1  General / General Discussion / Re: i would love to have an android app on: September 29, 2012, 09:46:36 am
Winamp works for me as well. I used a Nokia N97 and now a Samsung G2, and the winamp app on both worked exceptionally well.

Just watch the transfer rates and data amounts.

Hey Hunter,

Selling my vinyl was hard but I had digital copies of most of it. What I didn't I don't miss.

As for Severed Heads, I believe Tom is about and doing shows still about the place.

However selling all the vinyl and going digital has made my djing a lot easier to do.

Ive been lucky enough to do DJ support for Assemblage 23, Icon Of Coil, Psyche, Shit Disco and last weekend, Grendel. And next month I'm support for Nactmahr. Made all much easier using digital gear.

So while it sucks I got rid of my vinyl, my gigs have picked up and being part of the Promoters crew is a benefit as well.

The digitial thing has also been able to allow me to do some real cool stuff  with other Djs overseas and interstate.

So upsides and downsides..

3 sets are here. 2 45 minute sets and 1 2 1/2 hour set. All beat mixed in real time. the only artificial enhancements were Coca Cola and  far too many cigarettes.

My FB link is there (as is the link to my music project Digital Anodyne that has had some radio play and a remix I did for Scream Machine) so feel free to hit me up. Let me know you're from here as well.

No auto syncs or auto mixes were used in these sets. Two are from A club I Dj at and the third was just for something to do while not doing remixes.

Cheers

Of course now I have no idea where to buy my cheap watches from or where the best deals for gold are. Thankfully though my email still catches the spam for penis and breast enlargement. And for those that need to know, both are doing very well thankyou.

Understandable Shirow, Well done with the anti spam effort. My offer of some months ago still stands if that can be of an assistance to the music on DG.

8  General / General Discussion / Grendel/Nachtmahr/Cervello Elettronico/Shiv-R Gig on: April 25, 2011, 11:44:32 pm
Sunday night at The Step Inn, which is a little club. Crowd was about 60 or so but enthusiastic and the bands definitely appreciated the love.

Shiv-R was first and played a reduced set (as did all due to midnight closing time for all pubs and clubs as the following day was Easter monday) He was excellent and the vocals were far better live than those I have heard through CD's and Youtube. And although he had a pretty sidekick she seemed to have plenty of trouble banging her electronic drums in time. Oh well....

Cervello Elettronico simply blew us away with his set of Djing his own tracks basically.... The crowd in general were a little unsure what to do when there were no beats but they got into it. Again a shortened set but just amazing. The sounds and the manipulations of the sounds were awesome...

Nachtmahr were fantastic as well. A strong set with Thomas' vocal screaming working very well... Lots of banter between tracks and a couple laughs here and there. He worked the front row with letting them have the mike and chatting one on one with them during the breaks.  Shortened set but all the big tracks were played and sounded awesome.

Grendel were and I hate to say it, the let down of the night. But not by much. I think being rushed into the set and so forth and having to cut it all short may have jumbled things up. After the third track he seemed to get his vocals right and it all went well til he forgot the lyrics to a track and asked the crowd to help him out and they certainly did.

Overall then night would have been awesome considering the tickets to see all four bands was $50 australian... However it became truly epic later after Grendel finished there set..

After Shiv-r had done their set the were set upon by fans for photos and were happy to be tere for that which I thought was pretty cool. After that I walked up to Pete ( who is essentially Shiv-r) thanked him for coming to Brisbane to play, said I was aware he was tired after he set but could I just ask a question about software... Nerd/geek much? To his credit he gave me ten or fifteen minutes right then and there talking technical stuff and promised after the show to catch up and chat some more.

Cervello Elettronico (Dave) finished his set and as he was unplugging his gear I thanked him for coming to brisbane to play and asked pretty much the same questions. Again, he gave me five minutes of his time while he was unplugging his gear and said we could catch up afterwards..

He then turned straight around, grabbed a drink andf in less then ten minutes was on stage again playing for Grendel. I thought "Man he must be pissed at me as I wasted some of his downtime between sets being a fan boy".

SO Grendel is done and they have sourced to girls from te front row fopr the night and an afterparty place to go. Dave walks up shakes my hand, thanks me for my comments and then we chatted all things technical and otherwise for 40 minutes easy. He shared everything he knew to the questions I asked and more. We talked Djing, playing to 50 people in a strange country to him playing in Terrorfakt, stuff he has done in Europe and the US and he knew Australian Bands which I thought was cool as it is a very very small scene here and I think I pretty much gushed like a teen fanboy.

After we let Dave be,, we found Pete pulling down the equipment and packing stuff away and drunk. Still he had no issues giving us time to talk about technical things and then a couple photos and we left him sorting out cables..

For me it was a great gig and all of the players on that night that we met were very cool and happy to chat have a couple photos and spend some time.... They seemed more grateful than we did that people came to see them. We were grateful that they came such a long way to play...

9  General / Technical Support / Re: Streaming DG to your cellular 'phone/playing in your car on: April 12, 2011, 06:09:26 am
Since my N97 broke I have had to go back to my N95. Ovi store has a free internet radio app that I can get DG on. I use Vodafone in Australia so I can only speak from that perspective. I have a few problems with keeping the buffer going depending on where I am however.

With the internet radio app running I use  3.5 to 3.5 lead into my head unit in my car and DG comes through loud and proud.

I am a courier and spend anywhere up to 16 hours a day on the road.

The only problem is the amount of data it chews up. I get 2 gig free per month and that can go pretty quick. So as said in the first post make sure you can get the stream but be aware of your internet plan on your mobile phone.

(long post so apologies before you start to read)

There's a few things you need to ask yourself. Are you going to try to be a working DJ? How much money do you have to play with? What style are you going to mix? ( I assume dark wave/industrial etc)

I started DJing in the 80's on turntables in clubs using vinyl and beat mixing was the only way to go about club DJing. I bought many Turntables as they became better engineered and better technology was used to build them.

Last year I sold all my vinyl ( around 5000 12'' singles and maybe 1000 albums ) and after the tears (vinyl junkies will understand) I bought control discs for my turntables and a piece of hardware which allowed me to mix digital music with a live vinyl feel. (Torq and connectiv respectively)

Finally, early this year I bought a midi controller (Xponent) and I run it straight into the laptop to mix the same digital music.

Depending on which DJ's I speak to, some say learning on turntables and experiencing the tactile feel and the lag and all sorts of things that turntables and vinyl offer ( jumps, scratched after much useage, background grinding sound, needle quality) they were much better digital DJ's when they swapped to digital rigs.

Others have never seen a turntable or vinyl let alone used them and have no problem using a midi digital rig.

In the end is a personal choice thing. Midi DJing can make life very easy as there are auto sync buttons and various other tools that can make it so very easy to beat mix.

The cost of equipment is an issue. If you are, or intend to be a working DJ then the cost, in the end, will cover itself with the payoff from gigs.

If you are going to be  bedroom DJ then you really dont need tom spend large amounts of money.

Starting with a cheaper DJ rig then upgrading can cost you more then just buying the mid to top line DJ rigs.

Look at the DJ's you like and see what they use, see how they go about their craft.

Ultimately, it's not what you use to mix, it's how you use the gear. How you blend styles and beats and whether you choose to learn to beat mix without using the easy sync buttons and so forth. If you decide not to learn to beat mix then you would be just as smart to find a little cheap DJ program and play one song after another without worrying about blending beats.

With my rig I mix house, techno, funk, aggrotech, industrial, darkwave, hellecktro and never had a problem with the rig or the software. Do your research and look at the options with the equipment you are considering buying.

Must see Gary Numan one of these days...

I was fortunate enough to see Gary Numan here live in April I think. Having been a fan of his ( and up til recently having all Tubeway Army and solo on vinyl ) I can highly recommend seeing him if you get the chance.

Having taken to industrial leanings the last couple albums are IMO very good. He added a few of the older tracks in the live set but they were dirtied up a little to match the sound and style of Pure and sp forth.

Next gig here is at Easter when Grendel supported by Nactmahr play the same space as CC and mid year sees KMFDM which I am really looking forward to..

CC were supposed to support NIne Inch Nails for one of their tours here ( which I cant remember) but didnt... Probably just as well as even though I followed the tour around Australia ( its not stalking if you dont get caught) I think CC would've blown them away....

Given the choice I'd see CC every time.

Combi played couple nights ago in a small basemen club here in Brisbane (Australia) First support was some metal industrial band called devilution or something and I heard one song and guessed they really liked Slipknot.

Second support was Bitch Brigade.. Local australian duo. He on programming and she on vocals. I had heard the album the previous month so didnt expect anything. I wasn't disappointed. I got exactly what i expected. They were terrible. he was to cool to be cool and stood in front of the keyboard not even swaying, he looked bored to be there. She was simply atrocious. Tone deaf, obscenely thin and occasionally get a attack of "art" and move her hands in a goth trance like state for a minute. Just awful.

While we were watching Bitch Brigade ( who apparently will do birthday parties) the two drummers from the CC band stood beside us, looked at BB on stage, looked at each other, shook there heads and wandered off.

Combi was outstanding. Small crowd of about 300 in a little room two live drummers, the keyboard/programmer and alot of face paint. 90 minute set, 2 song encore with extended versions of This Shit and Never Surrender.
The stage was about 2 foot above the floor and Andy was front and center. No barriers and he was cool about photos to the point during the voxless bits he would grab someones camera, take a photo of himself, take a photo of the crowd and hand the camera back.

Vocals were outstanding, music was great and that has a lot to do with the venue.. The two people i went with met one of the drummers and were invited to the dressing room for photos. My buddy has CC logo Tattoos on his feet and Andy was happy to have photos with the feet and was apparently very cool about it all. Considering my buddy was to pick him up in a 63 Thunderbird but for the promoter being a prick he chatted to Andy about classic American cars for about ten minutes and then the decided to leave.

So a big night all in all. Money well spent and my two friends met an idol of theirs.

Shirow seems to be a nice fellow, i mean this is a lovely site, nice people and pretty colours, great music, intelligent conversation and a few lunatics inserted amongst the place and you realise that Shirows work has been mammoth and quite astounding.

Then there are times when you realise that he doesn't get out much.

Nice bloke though, lovely fella...

The first post in this thread will ensure I go no where near the link. Really should've looked around the site to gauge the sort of folks the frequent before trying this style of attention.

Admittedly its got most peoples attention, but not all attention is good attention. If no one goes there no one will know and therefore is an epic fail. RNC has made it quite obvious he is an arsehole of the highest grade and lowest importance.

PS I mean arsehole in the most disrespectful possible sense of the word. Arseholes happen to be my least favourite things in all exsistence, have an unpleasant evening arsehole.

pps Capitals go at the front of the first word of a sentence or a noun. The whole "shouting " thing is for
1. unimaginative preteens in chat rooms or
2. on threads where they know they are way out of their depth.

I'm going to run with option 2 in this case.
