I fucking hate it.  All of it.  Especially all of the autoformatting it does.  I spend more time undoing the autoformatting than just typing out what I want and formatting it the way I want it.

Maybe I'm getting old, but I like the older word processors better.  I even liked 2003, especially now - because it isn't 2007.  :(

why not just go to tools -> autocorrect and uncheck everything?
or go to preferences and uncheck the appropriate boxes in the "spelling and grammar" section?

wait ... that's word2004 for macs ... never mind

I have.  I went through one day and unchecked everything (that took me awhile to find).  The next time I opened word up, all the changes were not saved.  I about had a chinese come-apart.

Honestly, most of the autoformatting is reasonable.  There are a few quirky things that really get my goat.  These are the ones I don't know how to turn off, and that really chaps my ass.

I tried 2007 for an hour and I went right back to 2003. The interface is like walking in on grandma taking a shower... nothing's in the right place...

Why not try OpenOffice? It's Writer is like Word 97, no stupid ribbons or nothing, and it's got a formula editor. The database program kind of sucks, though.

I use Open Office 3. Its free, it remembers long words so I dont have to retype them constantly, its compatible with a lot of other formats and it works pretty much like word 2003.

Oh and did I mention its free?

In general, I use notepad to type stuff up.  But when working on documents and reports at work I have to be able to format them, include headers, etc...

Dear god I laughed my ass off when I read this.  Is openoffice compatible with .docx files?  I might have to talk to my boss about it, if it is.

For personal use, I'll probably look into this.

Thanks for the suggestions, Lexus and thinkingthing.

I ripped off the grandma joke from somewhere...it can supposedly open docx, but I don't see an option to save to it. Then again, it saves to PDFs sans Adobe, which is pretty handy.

You can actually try OpenOffice by running the Windows PortableApps version off a flash drive, though that might send off IT alarms if you try running it on your workplace computer.

Both of these are golden, I'm adding both to my repertoire. I may even have a chance to use them soon if my boss asks how the project management app has been working for us during the Monday department meeting...

Also giving a shout-out to Open Office; it's worked great for me at home. I 'm pretty sure I've opened .docx files with it, but as thinkingthing said, I don't think it will allow you to save back to it. However, you can save to the older .doc format... not sure if that would help you though.

Oh I totally didnt see that Thinkingthing suggested it as well.

Also, version 3.0 and higher is capable of opening and editing .docx files, however, it cant save in that format. It can save however, in the normal .doc format, as well as a whole bunch of other formats.

open office has a SHITTY spell check.  i am dyslexic so i like how word2003 checks my grammar mistakes.  i am all for open source, linux, etc.  but there are super black holes in the cosmos that don't suck as hard as open office.  not only that, it runs fucking:

Hm.. youre right that Openoffice is slow but that program enlisted me. I work with it permanently, every protocol I wrote is written by Openoffice.. No licences, shitty monopoly .docx format and last but not least Times New Roman font.
I dont use any fucking "AUTOMATIC" functions (I dont like them too), only automatic spelling check.
BTW, Im now writing in it, another protocol (organic chemistry practical exercise)..

Honestly,   I've been digging the ribbon interface for a while now.  Currently I'm using a beta of office 2010 and its the best I've ever seen.  Outlook lost all the bloat.  No,.. I'm not lying.  Its very fast and doesn't screw/lag up my machine like 2007 used to.

I've tried the following on the same machine at work

Office 2003 on Windows XP :: Somewhat fast but ugly, ugh
Office 2007 on Windows XP :: Weird to get used to the ribbon aspect, but that somewhat bloated laggy feeling remains
Office 2007 on Windows 7 :: Faster than xp, but still laggy. IMHO, still not as good as 2003/2000 was.
Office 2010 on Windows 7 :: Fantastic.

Back to word, 2010 is a very nice build upon 2007.  I highly recommend giving it a try if you can.  Its definitely gone thru usability tweaks.
As a side note, the ribbon interface really makes sense if have a higher screen resolution (1600x900 or greater),  which is ok cuz its cheap to get decent 1920x1080 dell lcds nowadays

Given a choice I'd go win7 and office2010.  I'm never going back to any older version of office. Ever.
Given no choice of win7 or 2010,  I'm going to google docs to write stuff up there

No. You've clearly misunderstood that this thread is about bashing office 2007 and the ribbons. :)
