I guess my point though, is that one persons 'in the same subgenre' is another persons 'totally different band'.

yeah...

a lot (most?) bands don't wanna fit into a given genre at all, they just wanna make whatever
they think sounds cool...  (and then there's all the terror ebm clones :), so trying to classify
them into one genre is fail...

IMO the best way to find similar bands is to find some albums by the band at amazon,
and look at the "also bought" and "also looked at" albums... 

Just wish iTunes and such had similar functionality (that was worth anything)
